Realisation of H2 refuelling station in Lübeck

Hypion realises hydrogen refuelling station for heavy goods vehicles in Lübeck together with MB Energy

Another step towards climate-friendly mobility: together with our partner MB Energy (formerly Mabanaft), we are currently implementing the construction of a high-performance hydrogen refuelling station in Lübeck. The facility is specially designed to meet the requirements of heavy goods vehicles and will provide up to 2,000 kilograms of hydrogen per day – enough to refuel up to 50 lorries a day.

The location near the A1/A20 motorway junction is strategically ideal: MB Energy already operates a conventional diesel fuelling station there, which will be usefully supplemented by the new hydrogen fuelling station in future. The integration of the facility into the network of Staack pool refuelling stations and the planned commissioning at the end of 2025 underline the practical relevance and long-term orientation of the project.

As Hypion, we are taking on the role of project developer in this project and contributing our extensive expertise in the planning and implementation of sustainable hydrogen infrastructures. Hypion has been developing the project to investment maturity since 2022 and has received funding of €5.1 million from the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport as part of the KsNI (“Climate-friendly commercial vehicles and infrastructure”) directive.

In November 2024, MB Energy decided to become the sole investor in the project, following on seamlessly from Hypion’s well-founded project development. Hypion GmbH initiated and designed the project and supported it through all planning and approval stages. By entering the project implementation phase, MB Energy is making a targeted investment in a sustainable infrastructure that will now be realized step by step.

Together, we are making a significant contribution to the development of a reliable hydrogen economy in the mobility sector – with a clear focus on sustainable solutions for heavy goods traffic. The next major step was taken in March 2025 with the submission of the building application. The plant is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2025.
