Maritime H2 supply concept: Requirements for a sustainable overall system
Hypion is a partner in the CAPTN Energy project consortium. In this two-year project, Hypion is developing and delivering H2-based solutions for sustainable maritime energy supply, as the shipping industry also faces the challenge of contributing to the reduction of climate-damaging emissions. To achieve this, fossil fuels must be gradually replaced by environmentally friendly alternatives – without compromising reliability, safety, and performance.
With our funded project H2HubMar, we are making a significant contribution to the CAPTN Energy Alliance. The alliance is developing innovative solutions for the provision of renewable energies for maritime applications. The focus of this field of innovation is on conversion and storage, transport, temporary storage, land-sea interfaces, and on-board conversion of energy sources at the point of consumption.
Hypion is investigating how the maritime energy transition can be achieved. The starting point is a comprehensive assessment of the current situation (status quo) and an analysis of the conversion, storage, transmission, and use of renewable energies for maritime applications.
Region & Significance

The focus is on our WIR region between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The aim is to develop a robust reference model that serves as a benchmark. Based on this, a practical overall concept for a scalable, economically viable hydrogen distribution infrastructure in Kiel will be developed. Ideally, this will then form the basis for the alliance partners to embark on the concrete implementation of a pilot project in the WIR region.
Schleswig-Holstein is a pioneer in renewable energies. The maritime economy, the Kiel Canal, and the ports make the region an ideal starting point for the development of a sustainable hydrogen economy. With Kiel as a model location, we want to show that sustainable energy supply is not only possible, but also economically viable and transferable to other regions.
